“You need something in your stomach. You’re not thinking clearly if you believe you can drop everything and walk away from what we’ve got,” I told her.
She shoved herself down the hallway, refusing to let me take her elbow, and evidently didn’t appreciate how hard such behavior was going to get her spanked.

“If you had any sense at all, Dante, you’d put some distance between me and you. At least until you know those agents have left town.”
I did the only thing I could. I pulled her close to my side, wrapped my right arm around her. She quieted and followed me into the private booth reserved in the restaurant.
She didn’t try to be beautiful; it came naturally.
I’d seen other men appreciating her plenty, but Savanna was made for me. Her smell, the way her brown brows cut across her forehead, and her lips bowed together like a gift I wanted to unwrap.
Our server poured water and left the table, and suddenly the words came. “Savanna, before I met you my gloom followed me everywhere. You lightened my darkness and helped put my broken pieces back together. I cannot—no more than the sun can cannot appear in the sky—give you up.” I tore a roll in half and dunked it into the olive oil and balsamic vinegar set out on a plate. “It’s past time you gave in and let yourself fall for me like I know you want to. Like I’ve fallen for you.”
Savanna tilted her jaw and bit her lip. “That’s a hell of a lot to mull over before appetizers have even arrived.”
After dinner, we strolled past slot machines where neon light trails ascended to a colorful burst announcing a big winner. Like fireworks, they splashed color over Savanna’s features. Her mouth was partially open, looking up at the brilliant display.
Could she feel it?
Did her heart and spirit recognize mine, like I recognized her?
I placed my hands on her hips, and turned her slowly around to face me, convincing myself that the expression of wonder on her features was all for me.
That she was in awe of what she felt too.
That she’d fallen hard.
Lowering my mouth to hers, I saw her eyelids flare slightly open and hoped it was a good sign.
“Savanna,” I said, and even to me it sounded like an incantation. Like the nuns at St. Agnes made us sing. Morning, afternoon and night my body’s desire and love for her rang like church bells in my soul.
It twisted my guts. It made me tighten my grip on her silky hair.
Leaning down to taste her, deepening the kiss, I didn’t give a rat’s ass who was watching.
The senior citizen special kept their eyes on the blinking and spinning wheels in front of them, oblivious that I was about to lay Savanna down on the red carpet behind their stools and fuck her on top of the spilled drinks and cigarette ash.
I bent to her ear and whispered, “Mine.” Wrapping the soft strands of her hair around my hand, I tugged backward. “I always protect what’s mine.”
Things had become a real mind fuck between us.
If she ran and escaped, bad things would happen.
I might be a tough son of a bitch, but if it was only a matter of time before Savanna was taken from me, and it would be like losing Lilly all over again.
God forgive me for the next thought that crossed my mind—that losing Savanna would be a hell of a lot worse.
“Let’s go home, baby. You don’t belong here, and I need you in my bed.”
Driving home, there was something eating at me like a mosquito bite I couldn’t reach to scratch.
My pulse sped as I flexed my fingers on the steering wheel. Pissed.
There was only one way to get myself under control, and that was by disciplining her for running away.
Someone needed to be taught a lesson that would ensure I had her complete attention.
Besides, she liked it.
She whispered, “I’ve brought nothing but trouble into your life. You and Carlos didn’t have to help me out, but you put your own reputation and livelihood on the line.” Her hands trembled in her lap.
“I could never stand by and watch you go through hell without trying to help,” I said.
We got out of the truck and took in the deserted surroundings. There was a stand of stiff and tall cat tails cutting a line through the deserted pasture on the other side of the barbed wire fence.
“Do you get that your punishment sets me free?” She glanced meaningfully at the belt loop which hung from my hand. “From guilt? From my unquiet mind?”
Her words turned me on. Already jacked up when I pulled over to the side of the road, my pulse quickened with taboo longing.
“Are you asking me to discipline you?”
Her eyes turned dark with desire. “Yes, I want you to take control.”
I grabbed her arm and spun her around, shoving her against the hood of the truck.
“Right then, this is for your own good.”
Yanking her leggings and panties down, I smacked her cheeks, slowly building intensity, watching as her skin turned from its usual creamy color to a burning red.
“Stand with your feet apart and put your arms over the top of that hood.”
